The Divine Comedy (2008)
Carbonised human skull, 22 ct gold. 5.5” x 8.5” x 7”
Carbon is the building block of every living thing. It is also the release of carbon, post-Industrial Revolution, that is the great fear of our modern time: the bringer of tsunamis, catastrophic “natural” disasters. By reducing an object to carbon, carbonizing it, we are pairing it down to a “pure” state. Here we are faced with whole carbon human male skull – every bit carbonized save for the enamel of the teeth and the gold caps and crowns. The skull has also become the very stuff of fine art material – the drawing medium, charcoal.
