The canary is the bird taken down mines to warn of dangerous toxic gases – a “saviour” bird. Birds are also seen as symbols of the spirit and the soul and of the link between heaven and earth. For Martyr the canary has been reduced to its pure state of carbon. The little black book (early 19th Century bible) with gold edges acts as a plinth.
