Mother, Father is Wounded (February 2020)
Currently on show at the Royal Academy 6th October 2020 – 3rd January 2021
Created just before lockdown, in February 2020, “Mother, Father is Wounded” is part of a wider series of works that are constructed situations, set up aboard the artists’ 19thcentury historic sailing ship. In the surrealist tradition, the artists are interested in the dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious. The ship’s movement manipulates the action as the scene develops with changing light conditions through the portholes, a collaboration between the constructed and the “real”. Alongside Z+Z’s repeated motifs of blood, semen and gold-capped human teeth are the exemplar of the golden ratio, a nautilus, and a giant lobster claw – surrealist motif – here a grinning castrating Pulcinella.
